Do I Need a Licensed Contractor to Remove Asbestos in NZ?
It's one of the most common questions we get: do I actually need to hire a licensed contractor, or can I remove this myself? The answer depends on what type of asbestos you have and how much of it there is. Here's a plain-English breakdown of the NZ rules.
When You Legally Need a Licensed Removalist
New Zealand law is clear on this. You must use a licensed asbestos removalist if: the asbestos is friable (crumbly, dusty, or can be reduced to powder by hand) — regardless of quantity; or the asbestos is non-friable (bonded in cement, vinyl, or other solid matrix) and the removal area exceeds 10 square metres. For any work on a rental property, commercial property, or worksite — even if the quantity is small — you should always use a licensed contractor. Workers on a site have legal protections under the Health and Safety at Work Act that apply regardless of the asbestos quantity involved.
The Limited DIY Exception for Homeowners
Homeowners do have a narrow exception. If you are the owner-occupier of a residential property, and the asbestos is non-friable and the removal area is less than 10 square metres, you can technically remove it yourself under NZ law — provided you follow WorkSafe's guidelines on PPE, containment, and disposal. This means: P2 respirator minimum (ideally full-face), disposable coveralls, gloves, and boots. Wet down the material before removal to suppress fibre release. Double-bag in heavy-duty plastic with 'asbestos waste' labels. Transport only to an approved disposal facility. Do not use a standard vacuum cleaner. Even where DIY is technically legal, the margin for error is small and the health consequences of getting it wrong are serious.
Our Advice: When in Doubt, Call a Professional
The cost of a professional asbestos removal job is nearly always less than people expect — and far less than the consequences of a mistake. A licensed removalist provides clearance documentation you'll need for property sales and building consents. They take the legal liability off you. And they ensure the work is done without exposing your family, your neighbours, or your tradespeople to asbestos fibres.
