Do not touch, break, cut, drill, sand, or otherwise disturb any material you suspect contains asbestos. Undisturbed asbestos is generally not a health risk — it's only when fibres become airborne that danger arises.

Tell everyone in the property immediately and instruct them not to go near it.

Close doors and windows to the affected area to limit air movement. Turn off fans or ventilation systems.

Place a clear warning ('DO NOT ENTER — Suspected Asbestos') and keep children and pets well away.

Do not use a vacuum cleaner, broom, or dry cloth on any suspected asbestos debris — these actions release microscopic fibres into the air.

If you must wipe a small non-friable piece, use a damp cloth only and seal it in a plastic bag immediately. Leave everything else untouched.

From a safe distance, photograph the suspected material and its location — these images help professionals assess the situation quickly.

Note where you found it, what it looks like, when you first noticed it, and any recent renovations that may have disturbed it.

While you wait, safely educate yourself on where asbestos is commonly found in NZ homes built before 1985: roofing sheets, eave boards, exterior cladding, textured ceilings, vinyl flooring, wall linings, and pipe insulation.

Use reliable sources such as WorkSafe NZ or TCB Contractors — avoid disturbing anything further while you research.
